Soluble lead flow batteries are a new type of energy storage technology that is being developed by a UK startup, SoLead Energy. The company has received funding from the Net Zero Technology Centre’s TechX Clean Energy Accelerator, which will help them bring their technology to market. Soluble lead flow batteries store energy by dissolving lead into a stable water-based electrolyte, making them safer and more recyclable than traditional lithium-ion batteries. The technology has been developed at the University of Southampton and has the potential to be used for stationary energy storage, such as integrating renewables or grid-connected assets. The company’s CEO, Ewan Fraser, believes that the key to bringing the technology to market is to prove its commercial viability and to build a strong team and customer relationships. In five years, SoLead Energy aims to have pilots in different applications and to start scaling manufacturing. In 10 years, they plan to have a factory in place and to be supplying the technology to multiple markets around the world.
