Allegro Energy, a company backed by Origin Energy, has unveiled its proprietary battery technology, a microemulsion flow battery (MeFB), at an open day event in New South Wales, Australia. The company claims its technology offers increased scalability, sustainability, and performance over existing technologies at a lower cost and higher degree of safety. The MeFB uses a water-based microemulsion electrolyte, which is non-flammable and non-toxic, and is fully recyclable. The technology is also designed to minimize the risk of thermal runaway. Allegro’s MeFB is different from traditional solid-state batteries, such as lithium-ion, as it uses redox flow batteries, which store energy in liquid electrolytes in two separate tanks. The company has also developed supercapacitors that use its proprietary MeFB technology for shorter duration and higher power requirements. Origin Energy has acquired a 5% stake in Allegro Energy and has committed to trial the company’s technology at its Eraring coal plant. The company has also secured a US patent for its technology and has received funding from Origin Energy as part of a $US17.5 million Series A funding round.
