The federal government eliminated its carbon tax on April 1, and British Columbia followed suit, sparking criticism from the Green Party. However, Adrian Dix, leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), reiterated the party’s commitment to combating climate change through alternative approaches. Under a confidence agreement with the Greens, the NDP government has committed to reviewing the CleanBC portfolio, assessing the future of various programs, including the heat-pump rebate. Although the province is facing a significant deficit, predicted to exceed $10 billion, Dix believes the heat-pump rebate remains a cost-efficient way to address climate change. The review’s results are expected to be announced later, with Dix emphasizing the need to evaluate all programs in the context of the province’s fiscal situation.
