Doral Renewables LLC and American Farmland Trust (AFT) have formed a long-term partnership to promote innovation and sustainability in farming communities across the US. The partnership supports AFT’s Smart Solar initiative, which aims to build long-term farm viability while scaling up domestic energy generation. The initiative has three main goals: safeguard land suitable for agriculture, strengthen farm viability, and accelerate solar energy development. With over 10 million acres of land needed to meet US renewable energy goals by 2050, the partnership will focus on agriculturally compatible solar development. Doral Renewables will work with AFT to implement agrivoltaics systems, which combine agriculture and solar energy generation on the same land. This approach can improve soil carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and wildlife habitats while producing food and fiber. The partnership will help farm families build generational viability and keep land in agriculture, while also advancing affordable and sustainable energy solutions.
