The Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) hosted a workshop bringing together 60 experts from EU-funded projects, industry partners, and the European Commission. The event showcased innovations in sustainable materials, such as compostable films, recyclable bioplastics, and bio-based fertilizers, aimed at transforming agriculture and packaging towards a greener future. The workshop focused on bio-based materials for packaging and agricultural applications, emphasizing circularity and end-of-life alternatives. Participants identified common challenges and opportunities supporting bio-based solutions. The bio-based material industry faces barriers to market entry, including cost competitiveness and performance standards, which CBE JU aims to tackle. The event featured presentations from over 20 CBE JU-funded projects, including PEFerence, WOODCELL, and ELLIPSE, demonstrating the diversity of bio-based solutions under development. The workshop addressed EU policy priorities, including scaling up sustainable use of renewable biological resources, and highlighted key projects revolutionizing the agriculture and packaging sector, such as replacing fossil-based polyesters with 100% bio-based furanics polyesters. CBE JU is a key enabler of the new EU Bioeconomy Strategy, supporting projects that promote circularity and reduce environmental impacts.
