Black Donuts has launched InTire Labs, a research center focused on developing sustainable bio-based materials for tire manufacturing. The goal is to replace fossil-based raw materials with environmentally friendly, biodegradable options to reduce microplastic emissions from tire wear. The lab is equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and technology to support the full lifecycle of material development, from formulation to performance validation. In addition to material development, InTire Labs is also researching intelligent manufacturing, including the integration of smart sensors and digitalized processes. The lab is also exploring methods to produce high-quality recycled materials and develop digital material models to simulate tire performance. Meanwhile, Michelin has announced plans to build a demonstration unit for producing the 5-HMF molecule, a bio-sourced molecule that can replace fossil fuel-derived ingredients in various industries. The ultimate goal of both initiatives is to accelerate the transition to more sustainable and environmentally friendly materials in the tire manufacturing industry.
