A new data center is being planned in Halle, Germany by a company called DataHall, which is expected to be operational by 2026. The facility will have an initial capacity of 4MW, with plans to expand further. The data center will offer a mix of colocation and hosting its own AI hardware for customer use. One of the unique features of the facility will be the use of “Organic Solidflow” redox flow batteries, produced by CM Blu, which use non-toxic liquid carbon compounds as electrolytes. This technology aims to replace lithium-ion batteries and has the potential to scale to 50MW. The data center will also use direct current transmission instead of alternating current, and plans to offer its waste heat to the local district heating network. DataHall’s CEO, Christoph Wegner, aims to replace a nearby coal-fired power plant and has invested in the development of this innovative technology.
