Gozen, a startup, has introduced a new material called Lunaform, which is not meant to replace traditional textile fibers, but rather create a “new material reality”. Unlike other plant-based cellulosic materials, Lunaform has a unique structure created through “BioCraft technology”. This process involves advanced fermentation, where microorganisms are placed in water trays and produce a lattice structure. The resulting bio-based jelly-like sheet is then dried and finished with dyes, embossing, or prints. This process takes only seven days, significantly shorter than the growing cycles for plant fibers.

According to Dr. Sedef Uncu Aki, Gozen’s CEO, Lunaform is a game-changer in the textile industry. The material has a distinct characteristic that sets it apart from other plant-based cellulosic materials like cotton, hemp, or TENCEL Lyocell. This innovative material is featured in an episode of Lenzing’s Blue Cast podcast and is part of a series on SJ Denim from Lenzing’s Carved in Blue denim blog, which explores the world of denim and sustainable textile innovations. Lunaform’s unique properties and production process make it an exciting development in the textile industry.
