INEOS Styrolution, a leading styrenics company, has commercialized its 100% bio-attributed polystyrene, Styrolution PS 158K BC100. This sustainable material is now being used in food trays available in the Japanese market through a partnership with a major retail franchise. The bio-based polystyrene is made from 100% bio-attributed feedstock, certified by ISCC, and achieves a 172% reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional polystyrene. It meets global food contact standards, including the Japanese Food Sanitation Act, and has received JCII’s A certification for food safety.
The new material offers excellent heat resistance and clarity, maintaining the quality and visual appeal of food packaging. According to Marcela Villegas, Vice President of Business Management APAC at INEOS Styrolution, this milestone demonstrates that sustainability can be achieved without compromising quality or safety. The company is committed to integrating bio-attributed materials into everyday life, allowing businesses to progress in their environmental goals while meeting regulatory standards. This innovation is a significant step towards a more sustainable future for food packaging.
