Stryten Energy LLC and Largo Clean Energy Corp. have formed a new company called Storion Energy, which aims to provide affordable vanadium electrolyte for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). VRFBs are used in long-duration energy storage (LDES) applications and are a safe and reliable solution for grid stability and renewable energy integration. Storion Energy’s Earth to Energy model combines access to high-quality vanadium from a US-based mine with domestic electrolyte production, creating a fully integrated supply chain for utility-scale flow battery LDES solutions. The company estimates that it can provide vanadium electrolyte for less than $0.02 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), making it competitive with lithium prices. The goal is to help the US lead in critical energy infrastructure and enable the widespread adoption of VRFBs. The formation of Storion Energy is expected to create a path for competitive VRFB pricing and challenge the dominance of lithium in utility-scale deployments.
