Vietnam has great potential for developing bio-based packaging due to its abundant natural resources and competitive production costs, according to Ngo Dac Thuan, chairman of IP Group JSC. However, the country faces limitations in human resources, research and development, and infrastructure. To unlock the industry’s potential, domestic companies need to invest in R&D, international cooperation, and skilled professionals, as well as build modern infrastructure and leverage government support. The demand for sustainable and eco-friendly packaging is increasing globally, driven by consumer awareness and stricter regulations. Vietnam can be a competitive player in the market if it takes action now. Emerging technologies in the food packaging industry include polylactic acid, biodegradable films, molded pulp, and biodegradable additives. Alan Nguyen, a representative from Eurofins Sac Ky Hai Dang, highlighted the importance of complying with stringent standards and regulations in the US and European markets for sustainable exports. Paul Le, vice president of Central Retail Vietnam Group, emphasized the importance of establishing a strong presence at home and adapting to international regulations, consumer preferences, and standards for businesses looking to expand internationally. Thuan emphasized the need for domestic companies to increase investment in R&D, foster international cooperation, and attract skilled professionals to unlock the industry’s potential. Vietnam can capitalize on its advantages and position itself as a competitive player in the global market if it takes strategic action.
