XL Batteries has successfully commissioned its long-duration energy storage (LDES) technology, a major milestone in the company’s development of safe, low-cost, and reliable grid-scale batteries. The technology, known as Organic Flow Battery, addresses limitations in current battery technologies by using a patented organic electrolyte molecule and proven flow battery architecture. The partnership with Stolthaven Terminals in Houston aims to demonstrate the efficiency, duration, safety, reliability, and low-cost profile of the Organic Flow Battery technology in real-world conditions. The project is expected to generate financial and operational benefits for Stolthaven Terminals, including the potential to provide energy storage and power to ships calling at its terminals. The successful commissioning of the project provides XL Batteries with valuable data to inform the final design decisions needed to scale its commercial product, giving the company a low-cost, direct path to large-scale commercial viability.
